Analysis of micro-particles vacuumed from the Turin Shroud

چکیده
Aim of the present analysis of particles, in the range of 3-30 m, vacuumed from the Turin Shroud, is to perform a classification and possibly to refer them to the environments in which, from historical information, it results that the Shroud was exposed. Grains of pollen, linen and cotton fibers, mites, spores and fungi, mineral particles and particles possibly coming from body fluids have been studied and the classification of some of these particles has been possible. The attention has been focalized to the pollen grains, to see if M. Frei’s results can be confirmed or not, without forgetting a more general view of the analysis with the aim to detect which kind of new information can useful for the Shroud studies. The main results are: pollen analysis seems in agreement with M. Frei’s results; there are few cotton fiber mixed with linen ones; many mineral particles are compatible with the Jerusalem soil.

Uncovering the sources of DNA found on the Turin Shroud
The Turin Shroud is traditionally considered to be the burial cloth in which the body of Jesus Christ was wrapped after his death approximately 2000 years ago. Here, we report the main findings from the analysis of genomic DNA extracted from dust particles vacuumed from parts of the body image and the lateral edge used for radiocarbon dating. Several plant taxa native to the Mediterranean area ...
متن کاملPhotogrammetric Responses From The Shroud of Turin
The unique results produced by simple studies of the Shroud of Turin sets this particular artifact apart from all other known artifacts. When photographed, the Shroud image appears more clearly to the human eye in the photographic negative than in the photopositive. When image-processed by a VP-8 Image Analyzer, the Shroud image produces a three-dimensional response unlike any other image so pr...
متن کاملOptical and chemical characteristics of the mineral particles found on the face of the Turin Shroud
We have studied optical properties (in optic and petrographic microscopy) of mineral particles (diameter > 1 μm) deposited on the surface of a small (≈ 1.4 mm height, 610 μm wide) sticky tape triangle corresponding to the Face area of the Turin Shroud (TS). All these particles were studied by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and their elemental compositions were analysed by X-ray microfluor...
متن کاملThe Shroud of Turin: an Amino-carbonyl Reaction (maillard Reaction) May Explain the Image Formation
The Shroud of Turin is a large piece of linen that shows the faint image of a man on its surface: it has been claimed to be the shroud of Jesus. Here we report evidences that colour can be produced by reactions between reducing sugars, left on the cloth by the manufacturing procedure, and amines deriving from the decomposition of a corpse. Treatment of a cloth prepared according to the ancient ...
متن کاملA robust statistical analysis of the 1988 Turin Shroud radiocarbon dating results
Using the 12 published results from the 1988 radiocarbon dating of the TS (Turin Shroud), a robust statistical analysis has been performed in order to test the conclusion by Damon et al. (1998) that the TS is mediaeval. The 12 datings, furnished by the three laboratories, show a lack of homogeneity. We used the partial information about the location of the single measurements to check whether t...
